Olivia Rodrigo’s third album follows Sour and Guts, with a reported shift in sonic direction away from the pop-punk roots that made both those former records. Drawing on time spent in London, Rodrigo has called it her most experimental to date, as she undirties her sound with synthpop, in a cleaner move toward “sad love songs.” The synthpop dimension isn’t immediately evident from forerunning ballad ‘Begged,’, which recently debuted as a princess-girlhood nostalgic SNL performance, and which is as stripped-back as it gets. Only the power driver ‘Drop Dead’ lands the synthpop jump: strings, marching percussion, a lyric referencing The Cure’s ‘Just Like Heaven’, and with an opulent music video shot at Versailles Palace.
