Nate Amos has been delighting and baffling the good folks of Brooklyn with his quirky, genre-straddling duo Water From Your Eyes for a while, but it’s his solo project This Is Lorelei that seems likely to thrust him into the spotlight. The buzz that surrounded his debut album Box For Buddy, Box For Star was considerable, and with The Singer In My Band, that buzz is only going to grow. Turning his attention to country and folk rock, Amos is focusing on the music that has soundtracked much of his life. His father, Bob Amos, is a bluegrass musician of some note, and The Singer In My Band not only pays tribute to his influence but also features him on banjo. Bluegrass and folk have been central to his life, and the songs on The Singer In My Band are shot through with a love for the genre and a songwriting style that flows naturally. What really brings it to life, however, is Amos’ natural pop sensibility and way with a melody. The likes of ‘Oh No Now My’ and ‘Billy Came Back’ instantly burrow their way into the pleasure centres and refuse to leave. Channelling a laid-back slacker style, Amos frequently calls to mind the likes of Kurt Vile and Alex G, and the video for ‘The Kid With The Crown’ seems to be a deliberate nod to the latter’s ‘Gretel’.
