Despite being one of the biggest names in alternative rock, Dinosaur JR follow DIY principals. Helping do everything on their terms is the benefit of frontman J Mascis owning and running his own studio in Amhurst, Massachusetts. It’s where the core trio – Murph (drums), Lou Barlow (bass/vocals) and J Mascis (guitar/vocals) – almost entirely self-recorded this astonishing record and their first in five years. The opening cut ‘Several Got Away’ sets the tone and it’s a treat to hear Masics solo through his recently acquired 70’s Mesa Boogie MK 1 amp and his advice to himself of referencing the Dinosaur Jr’s debut album for the production feels like a move that’s paid off.
