Before he became known as “the Lou Reed of gay porn,” J.D. Slater was deep in the New York punk scene. That restless, experimental streak carries straight through into Elbow Deep in the Hoopla, a collection of previously unreleased scores for three Club Inferno films that finds him diving headfirst into the loop-based sampling techniques that were reshaping electronic music at the time. The results are hypnotic with ‘Grand Fuck’ pulling in unexpected Gregorian chant textures, ‘Stallion Funk’ grooves with a slow, sinewy lurch, and ‘At Arm’s Length’ drifting into cold, brooding atmosphere. A strange, acid-laced and trance-inducing wonder.
