US house artist Joe Babylon knows how to add a little magic to the deep house template and it’s that which has made his Roundabout Sounds label a favourite with the real heads. If you need any further evidence, then check out this new one, which opens with ‘Gawad’, a low-slung and off-balance slow motion hypnotiser with the dustiest of hits. ‘Person L’ brings a little more melody and warmth to drums that remain well-aged and lovably imperfect, while ‘Wires Ones’ has some serious weight in the kicks. It’s the sort of warm-up tune that really tests the speakers and ‘Sofie’s Place’ then lets some light pierce the murky depths with swirling melodies bringing a subtle sense of optimism.
