On the label’s eighth release, Los Angeles-based Rocky Hill Records introduces us to a new talent: Phoenix-based producer Paul West. His trademark sound is deep, warm, emotive and stargazing, doffing a cap to the Motor City whilst carving his own sonic niche. Our picks of a very strong bunch include the spacey, tactile and lightly dubby opener ‘Starcluster’, the deep electro shuffle of ‘Icarus’, and the languid, sun-up wonder that is title track ‘Blue Sun’ – a real widescreen slab of glassy-eyed deep house positivity. Elsewhere, ‘Light Speed’ sounds like Drexciya mixed with some of Dance Mania’s more futurist releases, and Dross collab ‘Elon’s Musk’ is a dark and moody electro number that takes aim at the noted social media boss, wannabe Bond villain and alleged Ketamine enthusiast.
