It’s now more than 25 years since Simon Green first emerged as Bonobo, and Distance In Static offers another reminder of why his music continues to resonate. So, what’s different this time around? For starters, it still sounds unmistakably like Bonobo. Across the album’s fourteen tracks, voices including Joy Crookes, Ichiko Aoba, Nilufer Yanya and Arooj Aftab appear alongside historic Iranian samples, guzheng recordings and electronics scrubbed of obvious origins that surface in wisps and fragments. Lead single ‘Me And You’ is probably the clearest statement of intent as he pairs an uplifting new wave sensibility with the slightly strange production touches that remain Green’s calling card. In other words, it could only be a Bonobo album.
