Six years after It Is What It Is, Thundercat returns with a sprawling, kaleidoscopic journey through his own inimitible take on jazz-funk, yacht-rock and modern psychedelia. With production from Greg Kurstin, Kenny Beats and Flying Lotus, the Distracted album is as much about reflection as it is exuberance, though it also grapples with grief, heartbreak and digital-age anxiety while finding release in lush grooves and intricate arrangements. Collaborators are top drawer and include WILLOW, Tame Impala, Channel Tres and Lil Yachty, who all contribute to a vital and widescreen sound. Tracks like ‘This Thing We Call Love’ and ‘Thunderwave’ highlight Bruner’s deft melding of funk, psych and pop sensibilities and make this another standout in his assured catalogue.
