Max Gardner is part of San Francisco’s revered Direct To Earth crew and now he makes a solo debut on Sonic Groove that is thought-provoking but also physical in all the right ways. ‘Acid Slide Protocol’ is densely packed, like worms in a box, full of movement, alien and with many different focal points that steal your attention. ‘Signal Reissue’ is deep and bassy with psychedelic synth swirls and ‘Ghost’s Grumble’ layers up hissing hi hats and glitchy textures that rub like sandpaper on the rigid drums. There is a little more looseness to ‘Orbital Trace’ with its cosmic synth motifs and shapeshifting rhythm.
