Benoit Pioulard’s Eidetic is a hauntingly beautiful exploration of texture and mood, blending organic folk instrumentation and songwriting with electronics and odd timings – ever suiting our current liking for future-pastoral imagery. Pioulard is actually an alias of photographer Thomas Meluch, which adds to the mystery of the artist behind this 17-track masterwork. But really, this is an album that hardly needs ‘mystery’ to keep it afloat. The haze-dreams contained therein, such as ‘Halve’ and ‘Nameless’, feature such winding structures and soul-brushing lyrics and guitarwork that the mere ear-glimpsing of them alone is enough to keep our attention locked. Fans of Arthur Russell will certainly love this one, but there’s an advanced quality to the songwriting that will equally appeal to those keen on themes of mortality and loss, and that’s not to mention the album’s allusions to rural landscapes traversed by the artist, such as Maine and Washington.
