Originally released in 1999 at the cusp of the new millennium, no act under the much maligned “nu-metal” label would become as seminal or incomparable as the masked, nine-member Iowa collective Slipknot would with the release of their groundbreaking eponymous debut album. Marking the arrival of the now iconic household name vocalist/frontman Corey Taylor, whose viscerally unkempt aggression and unhinged delivery spat in the face of mainstream commerciality, the group conjured an abrasive, wall-of-sound approach far too intense to be ignored. From frenetic buzzsaw riffs to hefty grooves, menacing turntablism, a claustrophobic three-man percussive assault and Taylor’s vitriolic yet cathartic throat-shredding, cuts such as ‘(Sic)’ and ‘Eye Less’ continue to maintain their integral ferocity decades on while rap-metal bangers ‘Spit It Out’ and the more melodious ‘Wait & Bleed’ have remained both two of the band’s biggest singles as well as high watermarks for the boundary expansions of mainstream metal. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, this double LP edition comes complete with both the original Ross Robinson-produced full-length as well as a bonus disc of rare and unreleased demos, alternate mixes and B-side bonus tracks.
