He may be prolific, but Sound Ancestors is still Madlib’s first solo album under his most famous alias for almost eight years (the others were collaborations or released under one of his other pseudonyms). Sound Ancestors, then, is a significant release is his discography and could well yet prove to be one of his finest full-length excursions of all time. Curated and arranged by friend Kieran “Four Tet” Hebden, the set is a kaleidoscopic, sample-heavy musical journey that melds his own distinctively different hip-hop beats with a smorgasbord of vocal and instrumental elements lifted from jazz, soul, reggae, easy listening, jazz-funk, Latin folk, funk-rock and psychedelic rock records.
