The sophomore studio album of American indie pop band The Marias, Submarine comes as the sequel to their debut record Cinema, and the trequel to the ‘Superclean’ EP. Preceded by the lead single ‘Run Your Mouth’, the album is a representation of solitude and exploration; in the band’s own words, the act of choosing to be alone and listening to what the heart needs and not what it wants. The band’s preferred mode of representing this visually is cryptic underwater videography; lyrically and sonically, we find ourselves submerged in vats of slick, glossy funk, amid lyrical themes of conflict avoidance and gossip; both serve as effective conduits through which we may find ourselves dancing and reflecting at the same time.
