2025 reissue, 12″ LP, Merge Records.

London-based three-piece The Clientele didn’t rush into releasing a debut album, they released an armful of EPs and singles, gradually building momentum and fine tuning their sound to craft one of the most beautiful and atmospheric dream pop albums of the noughties. Released via Merge records back in 2003, there’s a sense that The Clientele were undisturbed by the garage rock, emo or any of the other scenes that were dominating the indie press at the time. Instead they offered respite and calm making music that makes people truly listen. Chances are there would be no need to hush the person in front of you in the crowd if they were to play ‘Missing’ live – it just a knock out. As is ‘House On Fire’ it’s a track that completely envelops you with its melody-rich arrangement lush textures and soulful basslines. Standing on the outskirts away from the rush of the limelight clearly nurtured Clientele in the best possible way.
