For its careful arrangement and chirpy register – with vocals purpose-lent by Helsinki singer Vilja Larjosto – Lusine’s ‘Two Dots’ is a memorable case of downtempo science from the late noughts. As the lead track on the Texan artist’s landmark album A Certain Distance (now reissued through Ghostly International), it’s a nostalgic listen, landing in the same mood-lane as Shigeto, Bonobo, Letherette or Rival Consoles, who took on the same sound in the years to come, and developed it. Listen on to Lusine, though, and hear deep, dusted minimal rooms like ‘Twilight’ and ‘Every Disguise’, as they hear Jeff McIlwain’s doff his many hats, capturing both his original ambitions as a minimal-IDM mastermind, and his later years folding pop melodicism into that mix.
