Ghost Box has described the style of his debut album from Pneumatic Tubes (the solo alias of Midlake and Mercury Rev keyboardist/woodwind player Jesse Chandler) as “American kosmiche”. It was reportedly inspired by the landscapes of upstate New York, where he grew up, with the ‘Treetops’ mentioned in the title being a summer camp he and his parents attended as children. Musically, it’s detailed, evocative and emotive, with Chandler wrapping pastoral flute and clarinet sounds, twinkling electric piano sounds and glistening guitar motifs around shuffling, analogue synth-heavy krautrock grooves, jazzy rhythms, decidedly cinematic soundscapes and spacey ambient washes of sound. – Juno
