It can’t be easy to compile a best of for a band where nearly every single tune on their albums is worthy of featuring. The list they come up with is one of stone cold bangers and a reminder what a travesty it is that the Manchester indie icons are irreconcilable and remain unlike Oasis seemingly destined to be split up forever. The pick of the lot here? Johnny Marr’s tremolo riff on ‘How Soon Is Now?’; the punchy drums, pointy, cyclical guitar riff and Morrissey’s poetic lines on ‘What Difference Does It Make?’ are intoxicatingly alive. And Andy Rourke’s bass playing on ‘Hand In Glove’ bounces along brilliantly. Few, if any, will ever reach this level of indie perfection.
