Stockholm artist Fever Ray emerged from the shadow of The Knife with a debut that never really behaved like one, arriving fully formed, hermetic, and faintly unsettling. The fact it keeps returning in expanded form suggests it never quite left. The sound is distinctive from the first bar. ‘If I Had A Heart’ moves at a slow, deliberate pace, drums spaced widely apart, synths held low and heavy while Dreijer’s vocal sits pitched down, almost submerged. ‘When I Grow Up’ shifts the rhythm forward, a more direct pulse, but the arrangement stays spare, each element isolated. Then ‘Keep The Streets Empty For Me’ stretches things out, sustained chords and a restrained beat giving the vocal room to hover. It’s cold, but carefully so.
