A pointed critique of American consumerism and iconography lands in The Strokes’ forthcoming album Reality Awaits, heralded by the single ‘Going Shopping’, and coinciding with a major international festival tour commencing this summer. Co-produced with Rick Rubin, it’s their first new music since 2020’s critically acclaimed The New Abnormal, which sparked a new chapter for the band in exploring the themes and sounds of post-COVID spiritual crisis and bad-dream balladry. The rollout this time, however, indicates a cleaner and surrealer sound, a false cushiness reflected much more plainly in the lyrics: “solidarity can be difficult when you got cool stuff to lose…”
