After five years, American singer-songwriter Lindsey Jordan finally returns with her third album under the Snail Mail moniker. This time around, it’s fair to say that introspection is very much the prevailing theme of her approach. She addresses the big questions on Ricochet, life, death and whatever happens after all that. Which is not to say that Ricochet is a heavy album. Jordan’s skill as a songwriter is to keep things light and awash with gorgeous harmonies. Had Ricochet been written in the early 90s, it would not be a surprise. It’s an album awash with big indie-pop songs that worm their way into your head and, thankfully, offer a great deal of comfort. Whether she’s singing about failing relationships (Dead End) or she’s on her way to heaven (My Maker) there’s a sense of determination and resilience that infuses her songs. So, whilst this is an album shot through with introspection, the importance lies in the fact the Jordan has apparently worked out what she’s going to do when life throws up obstacles. That she’s done it with the help of some brilliant poptones is only a bonus.
