South London four-piece Dry Cleaning had the honour of being in the studio with some of the finest recording artists of this century so far for this third studio album of theirs. After writing collaboratively at their rehearsal space in Peckham, they developed the album at Jeff Tweedy’s Chicago studio the Loft, at Sonic Studios in Dublin with Gilla Band’s Alan Duggan and Daniel Fox, and finally with producer Cate Le Bon – a colossal solo artist in her own right – at Black Box in the Loire Valley. Loosely defined as avant-garde rock, there’s aspects of 80s US punk and hardcore, stoner rock, no wave and pastoral fingerpicking and the finest expression yet from Florence Shaw’s spoken word. The single ‘Hit My Head All Day’ is light and poppy yet the Gilla Band influence comes across and there’s some neatly absurd lines to keep you entertained whilst nodding to the groove: “When I was a child I wanted to be a horse/Onions, carrots, and celery (Onions, carrots, and celery).” The meticulously crafted follow up to Stumpwork is well worth the wait.
