Oliver Nelson’s Blues And The Abstract Truth is his masterpiece album. Not only does it feature his classic ‘Stolen Moments’ but also plenty of other big tunes from his carefully assembled jazz sextet. The group is lead masterfully by trumpeter Freddie Hubbard who was at the peak of his powers at the time and alto saxophonists Nelson and Eric Dolphy (Nelson doubling on tenor) also make a strong union that makes each tune simmer. Add in piano from Bill Evans, Roy Haynes on drums and bass from Paul Chambers and you have a superb rhythm section that really shines through. – Juno
