David Bowie disappeared from the album cycle for a decade before returning with The Next Day, a record made in secret alongside longtime collaborator Tony Visconti and unveiled without warning on his 66th birthday. We move from the title track’s barbed glam-rock charge to the saxophone-smeared strut of ‘Dirty Boys’, before the reflective ‘Where Are We Now?’ offers one of the most affecting songs of Bowie’s later years. Elsewhere, ‘Love Is Lost’ and ‘Valentine’s Day’ find him revisiting familiar concerns with renewed purpose. Plenty of artists return after a long absence, but few do so with this much conviction.
