Charli XCX has always seemed to work best when she’s shifting shape and this latest move into a darker register feels like her leaning back into the British textures she grew up around. ‘House’ arrives like a storm front: distorted guitars, heavy machinery in the drums and John Cale murmuring through the mix as if he’s pacing the next room. It’s charred, gothic and oddly tender and the kind of track that feels discovered rather than designed. ‘Chains of Love’ softens the edges, pulling in synths and strings with a light touch that recalls her earliest work but there’s still that bruised atmosphere hanging over it. Together they sketch out a new space for her – windblown, and far more instinctive than polished.
