Description
2020, 12″ LP, Burning Witches Records. Clear vinyl.
Talk about a time capsule. Hunter Complex, AKA Lars Meijer, returns with an album that pretty much defines the term ‘synth wave’, throwing enough arpeggiated keys and snare-topped beats to score a wealth of classic movies and TV shows, although this shouldn’t be taken as meaning ‘Dead Calm & Zero Degrees’ is a simple pastiche lacking any real originality. But it is difficult to separate the anthemic, crystalline chords of ‘June Gloom’, with its low end groove, from thoughts of montages, emotional closing credits and some obtuse plot messaging. The title number is another case in point, kicking the record off with a track that seems to gather pace, elements and intention as it winds its way from knife-edge, stadium-filling refrains and cascading drum rolls to a more consistent chug. – Juno
