Coming up to its 25th anniversary, this understated gem in the Groove Armada catalogue – one that perhaps never received the recognition it deserved, especially in North America – gets a much needed reissue. While Vertigo rode the chill-out wave, this follow-up subtly shifted the duo’s sound toward deeper, bass-heavy grooves without abandoning their downtempo roots. Lead single ‘Superstylin” immediately grabbed attention with its infectious fusion of ragga and house, but much of the album offers something richer: sophisticated, dub-infused electronica with a soulful touch. Tracks like ‘Edge Hill’ are masterclasses in arrangement, blending lush orchestration with rolling basslines and euphoric synths. ‘Suntoucher’. featuring Jeru Tha Damaja, and ‘Fogma’ explore deep, hypnotic club atmospheres, while ‘Raisin’ The Stakes’ delivers understated funk grooves enhanced by Nile Rogers’ unmistakable guitar work. Even tracks like ‘Lazy Moon’ and ‘Tuning In (Dub Mix)’ lean into downtempo elegance without sounding formulaic. What elevates Goodbye Country (Hello Nightclub) is its perfect blend of accessible grooves and intricate, dubby production. It’s an album built for enjoying the fun more than quick club hits. Its refined approach and summery vibes feel as good as ever. A sophisticated, groove-laden release that deserves far more attention than it often receives.
