Santa Monica’s Mazzy Star’s third album had the unenviable task of having to follow on from its predecessor, So Tonight That I Might See, considered by many to be one of the greatest albums of the 90s. But due to the more acoustic nature of the songs that make up this third album, you sense it was never really intended to try to replicate that smash and was self-assured in wanting to pare things down a bit and lean into folkier basics that can let Hope Sandoval’s darkly atmospheric voice shine. ‘Flowers In December’, with the strings and harmonica backing it is so tender and fraught with emotion that you can envision Bob Dylan would dig.
